Home Tips

  1. The Do It Yourselfer can save money, sometimes. That being said, you must keep in mind the safety of yourself, your family, friends and neighbours. Installing or repairing water heaters encompasses gas and/or electrical related issues. There are strict codes in place and our technicians will not ignore safety issues. Problems have been found with gaslines supplying existing appliances, electrical wiring and vent pipes carrying away the harmful gases caused by the combustion process. Safety must not be compromised!

  2. Short of hot water? White flakes in your water and taps? Chances are you need a new dip tube. See the Photos page for the location of the dip tube and if you are mechanically inclined you can replace it yourself. If not, we can do it for you.

  3. Do you have a water softener in your home? Do you want to extend the life expectancy of your water heater? You should change the sacrificial anode rod on a regular basis. Again, check the Photos page for the location of the sacrificial anode rod.

  4. Is the drain valve on your water heater leaking? Pick up a 3/4" hose end cap at any hardware store and install it on the end of the drain valve for a temporary fix until you have time to replace the drain valve itself. The cap is not recommended as a permanent solution.

  5. Do you have black soot stains by the access door to the pilot light? It's possible your water heater is not venting properly or the unit is over-fired and you should have this problem rectified immediately! This could be an indication of vent gases escaping into your home.

  6. Thinking Tankless? Here is a 2011 article from Consumer Reports: http://news.consumerreports.org/home/2011/03/should-i-buy-a-tankless-water-heater-buying-advice.html . At present we cannot recommend tankless heaters for the replacement market in the Calgary area.

  7. Last but by no means least. Call us! We have the information you need.
